Chester Le Community Garden

Description

The Chester Le Diverse Community Garden initiative expands an existing allotment garden to provide local residents with access to environmental education and stewardship opportunities.

The Garden is located in a diverse neighbourhood in Scarborough, Ontario that is home to a large population of newcomers to Canada. The initiatives provide local residents, particularly those facing challenges such as isolation, lack of support structures, language barriers, and limited access to services with opportunities to participate a range of inclusive activities addressing food security and community building.

The garden expansion aims to attract new members to the existing vibrant community hub. The design includes two new accessible communal spaces: one active for those interested in participating in educational programming and one passive for those who are not yet comfortable with active engagement but prefer to observe the activities taking place. The plan also includes 3 new areas: one showcasing indigenous plants traditionally used by aboriginal communities native to Toronto, one celebrating plants that reflect the cultural diversity of the neighbourhood, and a large native pollinator garden. Supported by the Agincourt Community Services Association and the Weston Family Parks Challenge, the garden initiative is part of programming activities organized through the Agincourt Community Services Association.
